About this exercise

Side Hip Abduction is a bodyweight floor exercise performed lying on your side, lifting the top leg upward to work the outer thigh and hip abductor muscles. It is an effective isolation movement for strengthening the gluteus medius and tensor fasciae latae without any equipment.

How to Perform

  • Lie on your side on a mat with your legs stacked on top of each other and your body in a straight line
  • Rest your head on your lower arm or support it with your hand
  • Engage your core and keep your hips stacked vertically throughout the movement
  • Keeping your top leg straight, slowly raise it toward the ceiling as high as comfortable
  • Pause briefly at the top, squeezing the outer thigh and glute
  • Slowly lower the leg back to the starting position under control
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching
