About this exercise

The shoulder backbend stretch is a mobility exercise that opens the front of the shoulders and chest by guiding the body into a gentle backbend. It is particularly effective for countering the forward shoulder posture common from prolonged sitting and overhead activities.

How to Perform

  • Sit on your heels or stand, and place your hands on the floor or a surface behind you with fingers pointing away
  • Press through your palms and gently push your hips forward while arching your upper back
  • Allow your chest to open and your shoulders to drop back, feeling a stretch across the front deltoids and chest
  • Keep your neck relaxed and gaze upward or forward
  • Hold the position for the desired duration, breathing deeply into the chest
