About this exercise

The seated piriformis stretch targets the piriformis muscle located deep within the glutes. Tightness in this muscle can contribute to hip and lower back discomfort, making this stretch valuable for improving hip mobility and relieving tension in the posterior hip region.

How to Perform

  • Sit upright on the floor or a chair with your feet flat on the ground
  • Cross your right ankle over your left knee so the right shin is roughly parallel to the floor
  • Gently flex your right foot to protect the knee joint
  • Sit tall and hinge slightly forward from your hips until you feel a stretch in your right glute
  • Hold the position for 20–30 seconds, breathing deeply and relaxing into the stretch
  • Switch sides and repeat on the other leg
