About this exercise

A bodyweight mobility drill performed from a seated position where you actively retract the shoulder blades and open the arms wide like wings, strengthening the upper back and rear deltoids while improving thoracic posture. It is an effective corrective exercise for rounded-shoulder posture from prolonged sitting.

How to Perform

  • Sit upright on a chair or the floor with your spine tall and feet flat on the ground
  • Extend your arms forward at shoulder height with palms facing each other
  • Squeeze your shoulder blades together and pull your arms back and out to the sides like spreading wings
  • Keep the elbows slightly bent and the chest open at the end position
  • Pause briefly at the end range, actively squeezing the upper back muscles
  • Slowly return your arms to the starting position in front of you
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions, maintaining an upright posture throughout
