Seated Leg Extension

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Seated Leg Extension.

EasyQuadriceps

About this exercise

A machine-based isolation exercise that extends the knee against a padded lever arm to target the quadriceps with minimal involvement from other muscle groups. The seated position keeps the hip flexors shortened, making it particularly effective for achieving a strong peak contraction at full extension.

How to Perform

  • Sit on the leg extension machine with your back flat against the pad and the ankle roller positioned just above your feet
  • Adjust the seat so your knees align with the machine's pivot point
  • Grip the handles on the sides of the seat for stability
  • Exhale and extend both legs until they are fully straightened, squeezing the quadriceps at the top
  • Hold the peak contraction briefly, then slowly lower the weight back to the starting position
  • Avoid swinging or using momentum to lift the weight
