About this exercise

The Seated Glute Stretch is a floor-based flexibility exercise that targets the glutes and piriformis. Sitting upright, you cross one ankle over the opposite knee and lean forward to intensify the stretch through the hip of the crossed leg.

How to Perform

  • Sit upright on the floor with both legs extended in front of you
  • Bend one knee and place the foot flat on the floor
  • Cross the opposite ankle over the bent knee, resting it just above the kneecap
  • Sit tall and gently press the crossed knee away from you to increase tension
  • Lean your torso forward from the hips, keeping your back straight, until you feel a deep stretch in the glute of the crossed leg
  • Hold for the desired duration, breathing steadily
  • Release and repeat on the opposite side
