About this exercise

The seated chin-up is an assisted variation performed on a counter-weighted machine, making it suitable for beginners or those building toward unassisted chin-ups. With an underhand (supinated) grip, you pull yourself upward from a seated or kneeling position, emphasizing the lats and biceps.

How to Perform

  • Set the counter-weight on the assisted pull-up machine to provide the appropriate level of assistance
  • Kneel or sit on the platform and grip the handles with palms facing toward you (supinated grip), hands shoulder-width apart
  • Allow your arms to fully extend and let the machine support your weight
  • Pull your chest toward the handles by driving your elbows down and back
  • Continue pulling until your chin clears the bar level
  • Hold briefly at the top with shoulder blades squeezed together
  • Lower yourself in a slow, controlled manner back to the starting position
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
