About this exercise

The Scapular Pull-Up is an isolation exercise performed on a pull-up bar that trains scapular depression and retraction without bending the elbows. It builds shoulder stability, improves posture, and is an essential prerequisite movement for full pull-ups.

How to Perform

  • Hang from a pull-up bar with straight arms and an overhand grip, shoulder-width apart
  • Keep your arms fully extended throughout the entire movement
  • Depress your shoulder blades downward as if trying to put them in your back pockets
  • Hold the depressed position briefly, feeling the tension in your lats and lower traps
  • Slowly allow your shoulders to rise back to the relaxed hanging position
  • Maintain a braced core and avoid swinging or bending the elbows
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
