About this exercise

The runner's stretch is a foundational flexibility exercise performed in a deep lunge position that simultaneously targets the hip flexors of the back leg and the hamstrings and inner thigh of the front leg. It is commonly used as a warm-up before running or lower-body training and as a cool-down stretch after workouts.

How to Perform

  • Start in a standing position with feet together
  • Step one foot forward into a large lunge, lowering the back knee to the floor
  • Place both hands on the floor on either side of your front foot for support
  • Sink your hips forward and downward to deepen the stretch in the hip flexor of the back leg
  • Keep your front knee directly above your ankle and your torso tall
  • Hold the position for the desired duration, breathing deeply and relaxing into the stretch
  • Return to standing and repeat on the opposite leg
