About this exercise

A foam roller myofascial release exercise targeting the rectus femoris, the large muscle running down the front of the thigh. Rolling this muscle regularly improves quadriceps flexibility and can relieve tightness that contributes to anterior knee pain and hip flexor stiffness.

How to Perform

  • Lie face down and place the foam roller under one or both thighs just above the knee
  • Support your upper body on your forearms with your core engaged
  • Slowly roll the roller up the front of the thigh toward the hip, using your arms to control the pace
  • Pause and hold on any tight or tender areas for 20–30 seconds
  • Bend and extend the knee slowly while holding on a sore spot to increase the release
  • Continue rolling for 60–90 seconds per leg
