About this exercise

Foam Rolling the Calves is a self-myofascial release technique where you apply bodyweight pressure along the calf muscles using a foam roller to reduce tightness, improve tissue quality, and enhance ankle mobility. Slow, deliberate rolling with pauses on tender spots encourages the muscle tissue to relax and recover.

How to Perform

  • Sit on the floor with legs extended and place a foam roller under both calves just above the Achilles
  • Support your upper body with your hands behind you and lift your hips slightly off the floor
  • Slowly roll forward until the roller reaches the back of the knee, then roll back toward the ankle
  • When you find a tender spot, pause and hold pressure there for a few seconds before continuing
  • Cross one ankle over the other to increase pressure on a single leg if needed
  • Spend 60–90 seconds rolling each calf before switching sides
