About this exercise

The Ring Handstand is an elite gymnastics skill where the athlete balances inverted on gymnastic rings with arms fully extended. The constant micro-adjustments needed to keep the unstable rings still demand exceptional shoulder strength, proprioception, and body awareness beyond what a floor or bar handstand requires.

How to Perform

  • Set the rings at a height that allows you to kick or press into a handstand above them
  • Grip the rings firmly, press down through your palms, and kick or press up to a vertical inverted position
  • Lock your arms fully and squeeze the rings to minimize their movement
  • Stack your body in a straight vertical line: wrists, shoulders, hips, and ankles aligned
  • Point your toes, squeeze your glutes, and engage your core throughout
  • Use subtle pressure adjustments through your fingers and wrists to maintain balance
  • Hold for the target duration, then lower back down under control

About the Ring Handstand

The Ring Handstand is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
