About this exercise

The Ring Back Lever is an advanced gymnastics skill performed on rings where the body is held horizontally face-down, arms straight and close to the body. The lower back, glutes, and core work intensely to maintain the rigid horizontal position against gravity.

How to Perform

  • Begin in an inverted hang from the gymnastic rings
  • Slowly skin-the-cat through to a back hang position
  • Extend your body downward until it is horizontal and parallel to the floor, face pointing down
  • Keep your arms straight and pressed against your sides
  • Squeeze your glutes and brace your core to keep your body in a straight line
  • Hold the position for the target duration
  • Return to the inverted hang under control
