About this exercise

The posterior neck isometric is a rehabilitation and strengthening exercise that contracts the neck extensor muscles without movement. Pressing the back of the head against gentle resistance builds stability in the cervical spine and helps alleviate neck tension.

How to Perform

  • Sit or stand tall with your spine in a neutral position and chin slightly tucked
  • Place your hand on the back of your head
  • Press the back of your head firmly into your palm without allowing any movement
  • Hold the contraction for the prescribed duration, breathing steadily
  • Release slowly and relax before repeating
  • Keep your jaw relaxed and shoulders down throughout
