About this exercise

A foundational bodyweight hold performed in a push-up top position with arms fully extended. The high plank builds core stability, shoulder strength, and full-body tension while placing more demand on the wrists and chest compared to the forearm plank.

How to Perform

  • Begin on all fours on a mat, then straighten your arms and extend your legs behind you
  • Position your hands directly under your shoulders with fingers spread
  • Form a straight line from your head through your heels
  • Engage your core, squeeze your glutes, and press the floor away
  • Keep your neck neutral and gaze toward the floor just ahead of your hands
  • Breathe steadily and hold the position for the desired duration
  • Lower to the floor under control when finished

The High Plank is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
