About this exercise

The paused barbell squat is a tempo squat variation that requires you to pause at the bottom of the movement. The brief hold increases time under tension, improves positional strength, and builds greater awareness of proper squat mechanics.

How to Perform

  • Place the barbell across your upper traps at shoulder height on a squat rack
  • Step back, set your feet shoulder-width apart with toes slightly turned out
  • Descend by pushing your hips back and bending your knees, keeping your chest up
  • Hold the bottom position briefly while maintaining tension throughout your body
  • Drive through your heels and mid-foot to return to a standing position
  • Reset your breath and repeat for the desired number of reps
