About this exercise

The Oblique Crunch is a floor abdominal exercise that directs the crunch movement diagonally to emphasise the external and internal obliques rather than the rectus abdominis. By rotating the torso as you curl up, you build rotational core strength and improve lateral trunk stability.

How to Perform

  • Lie on your back with knees bent and feet flat on the floor
  • Place both hands loosely behind your head without interlacing your fingers
  • Rotate your torso and bring one elbow toward the opposite knee
  • Curl your shoulder blade off the floor as you rotate — the lower back stays in contact with the floor
  • Slowly lower back to the starting position with control
  • Repeat on the other side to complete one rep

About the Oblique Crunch

The Oblique Crunch is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
