About this exercise

The lying triceps extension, also known as the skull crusher, isolates the triceps to build strength and size in the back of the upper arms. Lying on a bench keeps the upper arms fixed so the movement comes entirely from the elbows.

How to Perform

  • Lie on a flat bench holding a barbell with an overhand grip, arms extended above your chest
  • Keep your upper arms vertical and your elbows pointing forward
  • Bend your elbows to lower the bar toward your forehead
  • Keep your upper arms still throughout the movement
  • Extend your elbows to press the bar back up to the starting position
  • Squeeze your triceps at the top
  • Repeat for the desired number of reps
