About this exercise

The Lying Hip Circle is a hip mobility drill performed on your back by drawing large circular motions with one leg, exploring the full range of the hip joint. The exercise lubricates the hip socket, improves joint mobility, and activates the muscles that control internal and external hip rotation.

How to Perform

  • Lie flat on your back on a mat with both legs extended
  • Lift one leg off the floor with the knee slightly bent
  • Begin tracing slow, large circles with your knee in one direction, moving through flexion, abduction, extension, and adduction
  • Keep the movement controlled and reach through the full comfortable range of motion
  • Complete the target number of circles in one direction, then reverse the direction
  • Keep the opposite leg and lower back pressed into the mat throughout
  • Switch legs and repeat on the other side
