About this exercise

The lying crunch with straight legs is a bodyweight abdominal exercise that increases the difficulty of a standard crunch by keeping the legs fully extended, which adds load to the hip flexors and demands greater core stability. It effectively targets the rectus abdominis while challenging overall trunk control.

How to Perform

  • Lie flat on your back on a mat with legs extended straight and feet together
  • Place your hands lightly behind your head with elbows pointing outward, or cross them over your chest
  • Press your lower back into the mat and brace your core
  • Curl your upper back off the floor by contracting your abdominals, bringing your chest toward your thighs
  • Keep your legs straight and on the floor throughout the movement
  • Hold the top position briefly, squeezing your abs
  • Slowly lower your upper back back down to the starting position
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
