About this exercise

The Lying Butterfly is a hip mobility and inner-thigh stretch performed on your back with both knees falling outward simultaneously into the butterfly position. The passive gravity-assisted stretch opens the hips and lengthens the inner thighs and groin, making it a useful warm-up or cool-down movement.

How to Perform

  • Lie on your back on a mat and bring the soles of your feet together, knees bent
  • Allow both knees to fall outward toward the floor, entering the butterfly position
  • Let gravity naturally deepen the stretch without forcing the knees down
  • Place your hands on your thighs or rest them at your sides
  • Breathe deeply and relax into the stretch, holding for the target duration
  • To release, gently bring your knees back together before returning to neutral
