About this exercise

The Lying Back Extension is a prone bodyweight exercise where you simultaneously lift your upper body and legs off the floor by contracting the lower back, glutes, and hamstrings. Often called the Superman, it strengthens the posterior chain and improves spinal stability.

How to Perform

  • Lie face down on the floor with legs straight and arms extended overhead or resting along your sides
  • Simultaneously lift your chest, arms, and legs off the floor by squeezing your glutes and contracting your lower back
  • Hold the top position briefly, keeping your body in a controlled arc
  • Lower everything back to the floor slowly and with control
  • Keep your neck neutral and gaze at the floor throughout — avoid straining upward
  • Breathe out as you lift and breathe in as you lower
