Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Lying Abductor Stretch.

EasyGlutesCore

About this exercise

The lying abductor stretch targets the hip abductors and outer thigh by crossing one leg over the body while lying flat on the floor. It improves flexibility in the iliotibial band, tensor fasciae latae, and the gluteus medius. Regular practice can reduce tightness from prolonged sitting or repetitive lower-body training.

How to Perform

  • Lie flat on your back on the floor or a mat with both legs extended
  • Keep your upper body relaxed and both shoulders in contact with the floor
  • Lift one leg and cross it over your body toward the opposite side, keeping the knee slightly bent
  • Use the opposite hand to gently guide the knee toward the floor for a deeper stretch
  • Keep the crossing leg's hip from rotating off the ground as much as possible
  • Hold the stretch for 20–30 seconds, breathing steadily throughout
  • Release and repeat on the other side
