Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Cobra Stretch.

About this exercise

The lying abdominal stretch, performed in a prone position, is a classic flexibility exercise for the rectus abdominis and hip flexors. Pressing up from the floor into an arched position elongates the entire front of the torso, counteracting the flexion pattern associated with prolonged sitting or heavy core training.

How to Perform

  • Lie face-down on a mat with your legs extended and the tops of your feet flat on the floor
  • Place your hands flat on the floor directly below your shoulders, elbows close to your body
  • Press your hands into the floor and slowly extend your arms, lifting your chest and abdomen off the mat
  • Keep your hips and legs relaxed and in contact with the floor throughout the movement
  • Look slightly upward and hold the extended position for the desired duration, breathing steadily
  • Slowly lower your chest back to the floor and relax before repeating

About the Cobra Stretch

The Cobra Stretch is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
