About this exercise

A static hip flexor and quad stretch performed in a deep lunge position. Dropping the back knee to the floor and shifting the hips forward lengthens the hip flexors of the rear leg while the front hamstring and inner thigh are also engaged.

How to Perform

  • Start in a standing position with feet together
  • Step one foot forward into a long lunge and lower the back knee gently to the floor
  • Keep the front shin vertical and the front knee aligned over the ankle
  • Shift your hips forward and downward until you feel a stretch along the front of the back leg
  • Place your hands on your front thigh or the floor for balance
  • Hold the stretch, breathing steadily
  • Return to standing and switch legs to stretch the other side
