About this exercise

The lever gripless shrug is a plate-loaded machine exercise that isolates the upper trapezius without requiring you to grip a bar. The machine uses shoulder pads or a frame that transfers load directly to the shoulders, allowing heavier loading and eliminating grip as a limiting factor.

How to Perform

  • Load the machine with the desired plates and position yourself inside the frame
  • Place your shoulders under the pads or rest your arms on the supports as the machine requires
  • Stand upright with a neutral spine, feet shoulder-width apart
  • Shrug your shoulders straight upward as high as possible toward your ears
  • Hold briefly at the top, maximally contracting the trapezius muscles
  • Lower your shoulders slowly back to the starting position
