About this exercise

A wide-stance squat performed while holding a kettlebell with both hands in front of the body. The sumo stance places greater emphasis on the inner thighs and glutes, while the kettlebell acts as a counterbalance that allows a more upright torso position.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet wider than shoulder-width apart, toes pointed outward at roughly 45 degrees
  • Hold a kettlebell with both hands by the horns, letting it hang at arm's length between your legs
  • Brace your core and keep your chest tall throughout the movement
  • Push your knees out in line with your toes as you descend into the squat
  • Lower until your thighs are parallel to the floor or as deep as your mobility allows
  • Drive through your heels to stand back up to the starting position
