About this exercise

The Kettlebell Sumo Deadlift is a hip-hinge movement performed with a wide stance and the kettlebell hanging between the legs. The sumo stance increases glute and inner-thigh involvement while keeping the torso more upright than a conventional deadlift.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet wider than shoulder-width, toes turned out 30–45 degrees
  • Place the kettlebell on the floor between your feet
  • Hinge at the hips and bend your knees to grip the kettlebell handle with both hands
  • Brace your core, keep your chest up, and maintain a neutral spine
  • Drive through both heels and extend your hips and knees simultaneously to lift the kettlebell
  • Stand tall at the top, squeezing the glutes
  • Reverse the movement by hinging at the hips and bending the knees to lower the kettlebell back to the floor with control
