About this exercise

A fundamental overhead pressing movement performed with one or two kettlebells held in the rack position. Unlike push presses, the strict press uses no leg drive — all force comes from the shoulders and triceps — making it an excellent test and builder of pure pressing strength.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, holding the kettlebell(s) in the rack position at shoulder height with knuckles facing up
  • Brace your core, squeeze your glutes, and set your wrists straight so they are aligned with your forearms
  • Press the kettlebell(s) directly overhead in a straight path, extending your arms fully at the top
  • At the top, the kettlebell should be over your wrist, which is over your elbow, which is over your shoulder
  • Lower the kettlebell(s) under control back to the rack position at the shoulder
  • Maintain an upright torso throughout — do not lean back or use leg momentum
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching, or press both simultaneously
