About this exercise

The kettlebell side swing is a lateral variation of the kettlebell swing where the bell is swung out to the side of the body rather than straight ahead. This movement strongly engages the obliques and lateral core while also training hip power and shoulder stability through a rotational plane.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, holding the kettlebell in one hand at your side
  • Hinge at the hips with a slight knee bend, letting the kettlebell swing back between your legs
  • Drive your hips forward explosively to swing the kettlebell up and out to your opposite side
  • Allow the kettlebell to arc up to approximately shoulder height
  • Control the swing back down and between your legs to load the next rep
  • Keep your core braced and your back flat throughout the movement
  • Complete all reps on one side, then switch hands and repeat
