About this exercise

The kettlebell pistol squat is a demanding single-leg squat variation where one leg is extended forward while you squat to full depth holding a kettlebell for counterbalance. It builds exceptional unilateral leg strength, hip mobility, and balance.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright holding a kettlebell by the horns at chest height with both hands
  • Shift your weight onto one foot and extend the opposite leg forward off the ground
  • Begin squatting on the standing leg, keeping the extended leg parallel to the floor
  • Descend until your glute reaches close to your heel while keeping your torso upright
  • Keep your heel firmly planted and your knee tracking over your toes throughout
  • Drive through your heel to stand back up, keeping the extended leg raised
  • Maintain control through the full range of motion on every rep
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching legs
