About this exercise

A deep lateral squat holding a kettlebell that builds unilateral leg strength while simultaneously stretching the inner thigh of the extended leg. The Cossack squat challenges hip mobility, glute activation, and quadriceps strength through a large range of motion.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet wider than shoulder-width apart, holding a kettlebell at chest height or hanging at arm's length
  • Shift your weight to one side and bend that knee deeply, lowering your hips toward the floor
  • Keep the opposite leg straight with the foot flat or toes pointing upward
  • Maintain an upright torso and keep the bent knee tracking over the foot
  • Push through the heel of the working leg to return to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching
