About this exercise

The kettlebell arm bar is a ground-based mobility and shoulder-stability drill in which you press a kettlebell overhead while lying on your back, then slowly rotate onto your side while keeping the arm locked out. The movement trains thoracic rotation, hip mobility, and shoulder stability simultaneously, making it an excellent warm-up or accessory piece for overhead lifting.

How to Perform

  • Lie on your back on a mat with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor
  • Press the kettlebell straight up with one hand, locking your elbow and keeping your wrist stacked over your shoulder
  • Extend the same-side leg straight along the floor
  • Slowly rotate your hips and torso onto the opposite side, keeping the kettlebell arm vertical and your gaze fixed on the bell
  • Let your top knee drop toward the floor in front of you as you settle into a side-lying position
  • Hold the stretched position for a breath or two
  • Reverse the movement in a controlled manner, returning to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching arms
