About this exercise

The inverted row is a horizontal pulling exercise performed by lying under a fixed bar and rowing your chest up to meet it. It builds the upper back, rear deltoids, and biceps using only bodyweight, making it an accessible alternative to pull-ups.

How to Perform

  • Set a barbell in a squat rack at approximately hip height
  • Lie underneath the bar and grip it overhand, slightly wider than shoulder-width
  • Extend your legs and keep your body straight from head to heels, with heels on the floor
  • Brace your core and squeeze your glutes to maintain a rigid body line
  • Pull your chest up toward the bar by driving your elbows back and down
  • Pause briefly when your chest reaches the bar
  • Lower yourself back to the starting position in a controlled manner

About the Australian Pull-Up

The Australian Pull-Up is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
