About this exercise

The Hip Clam Shell is a bodyweight isolation exercise performed on the side, targeting the glute medius and outer thigh by rotating the top knee open like a clamshell. It is widely used for hip activation, glute rehabilitation, and correcting knee-valgus patterns.

How to Perform

  • Lie on your side on a mat with your hips stacked, knees bent to about 45 degrees, and feet together
  • Rest your head on your lower arm or support it with your hand
  • Keeping your feet together and core lightly engaged, rotate your top knee upward as far as possible without letting your pelvis roll backward
  • Pause at the top and squeeze the glute
  • Slowly lower your knee back to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one side, then switch sides

About the Clamshell

The Clamshell is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
