Hip Abduction Fix

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Hip Abduction Fix.

About this exercise

A standing bodyweight mobility drill that improves hip abduction range of motion — the ability to move the leg outward away from the midline of the body. Standing tall and lifting one straight leg to the side builds hip stability, a balanced gait, and control of the outer hip and glutes. Because it is done upright, it also challenges balance and the core to keep the pelvis level.

How to Perform

  • Stand tall with your feet together, arms relaxed or hands on your hips for balance
  • Keep your torso upright and your supporting leg firm, avoiding any lean to the side
  • Keeping the working leg straight, slowly raise it out to the side, away from the midline of your body
  • Lift only as far as you can while keeping your pelvis level and hips facing forward
  • Pause briefly at the top of the movement
  • Slowly lower the leg back to the starting position with control
  • Complete all repetitions on one side, then switch to the other leg
