About this exercise

High knee sprints are an intense cardio drill performed in place or over a short distance, driving the knees as high as possible with maximum speed and arm drive. The exercise elevates heart rate rapidly and trains hip flexor strength, leg turnover speed, and cardiovascular endurance.

How to Perform

  • Stand tall with feet hip-width apart and arms bent at 90 degrees
  • Begin running in place, driving your right knee up to hip level while pumping your left arm forward
  • Rapidly switch legs, bringing the left knee up as the right arm drives forward
  • Stay on the balls of your feet and maintain an upright posture — do not lean back
  • Drive your arms vigorously to increase leg speed
  • Continue at maximum effort for the desired duration
