About this exercise

The hang back bar stretch involves gripping an overhead bar and leaning the body backward to open the chest, stretch the lats, and decompress the shoulder joints. It is an effective mobility drill for athletes who spend time in forward-bent postures.

How to Perform

  • Grip a pull-up bar or overhead bar with both hands, slightly wider than shoulder width, using an overhand grip
  • Allow your body to hang fully, feet lightly touching the ground or floating
  • Gently lean your hips and torso backward, creating an arching stretch through the lats and front of the shoulders
  • Keep your arms straight and let gravity deepen the stretch gradually
  • Hold for the prescribed duration, breathing slowly and deeply
  • Return to an upright hang before releasing the bar
