About this exercise

The handstand is a fundamental gymnastics and calisthenics skill in which the body is balanced vertically inverted on the hands with arms fully extended. It develops shoulder strength and stability, body alignment awareness, and proprioception.

How to Perform

  • Stand facing a wall (for a wall-assisted version) or on open floor for a freestanding hold
  • Place your hands flat on the floor, shoulder-width apart, fingers spread and pointing forward
  • Kick up into an inverted position, bringing your hips and feet directly above your hands
  • Squeeze your glutes, engage your core, and keep your body in a straight line from hands to toes
  • Look at the floor between your hands as a balance reference
  • Breathe steadily and make micro-adjustments with your fingertips to maintain balance
  • Come down in a controlled manner by stepping or rolling out

About the Handstand

The Handstand is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
