About this exercise

The front lever is an elite gymnastics strength skill in which the body is held horizontal, facing upward, while suspended from a pull-up bar or rings. It demands exceptional lat, core, and shoulder strength and represents one of the highest-level upper-body isometric challenges in calisthenics.

How to Perform

  • Hang from a pull-up bar or gymnastic rings with an overhand grip, arms fully extended
  • Engage your lats, core, and glutes fully before beginning
  • Tuck your knees to your chest and press your hips up until your torso is horizontal (tuck front lever to start)
  • Gradually extend your legs out as strength allows — one leg, then straddle, then full extension
  • In the full position, hold your entire body in a rigid horizontal line, face up, arms straight
  • Actively pull the bar toward your hips to maintain tension throughout the hold
  • Hold for the target duration, then return to the hang in a controlled manner

About the Front Lever

The Front Lever is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
