About this exercise

The dumbbell thruster is a powerful full-body compound movement that combines a front squat with an overhead press in one fluid motion. It builds lower-body strength and power while simultaneously challenging the shoulders and triceps, making it a highly efficient conditioning exercise.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height, palms facing inward
  • Brace your core and descend into a full squat, keeping your chest up and knees tracking over your toes
  • Drive explosively through your heels to stand up
  • Use the momentum from the squat to press both dumbbells overhead until your arms are fully extended
  • Lower the dumbbells back to shoulder height with control as you descend into the next squat
  • Maintain a tight core and neutral spine throughout the movement
