About this exercise

A lower-body compound exercise performed with a wide sumo stance and a single dumbbell held vertically between the legs. The wide stance and outward-turned toes shift emphasis onto the hamstrings, glutes, and inner thighs while reducing lumbar stress compared to a conventional deadlift.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet significantly wider than shoulder-width, toes pointed outward at 45 degrees
  • Hold a dumbbell vertically with both hands between your legs, arms hanging straight down
  • Hinge at the hips and bend your knees to lower the dumbbell toward the floor, keeping your chest up and back flat
  • Lower until your thighs are close to parallel and the dumbbell is near the floor
  • Drive through your heels and squeeze your glutes to stand back up to the starting position
  • Keep the dumbbell close to your body throughout the movement
  • Repeat for the desired number of reps
