About this exercise

The dumbbell step-up is a unilateral lower-body exercise performed by stepping up onto a raised platform while holding dumbbells. It develops quadriceps and glute strength, improves single-leg stability, and corrects muscle imbalances between legs. The height of the step can be adjusted to increase or decrease difficulty.

How to Perform

  • Stand facing a sturdy step or box, holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides
  • Place one foot flat on the step, ensuring the entire foot makes contact with the surface
  • Drive through the heel of the elevated foot to step up, bringing your trailing leg up alongside until you are fully upright on the platform
  • Stand tall at the top, briefly, without letting the trailing leg rest on the step
  • Lower the trailing leg back to the floor in a controlled manner, then return the lead foot to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one leg before switching to the other
