About this exercise

The dumbbell static lunge is a lower-body strength exercise performed from a fixed split stance, targeting the quadriceps and glutes. Unlike a walking lunge, your feet stay in place as you repeatedly lower and raise your body, providing concentrated stimulus on each leg independently.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides, feet hip-width apart
  • Step one foot forward into a lunge stance, spacing your feet comfortably apart
  • Lower your back knee toward the floor by bending both knees, keeping your front shin roughly vertical
  • Stop just before your rear knee touches the ground and your front thigh is parallel to the floor
  • Push through your front heel to drive back up to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on this side, then switch legs and repeat
