About this exercise

The dumbbell standing kickback targets the triceps by extending the forearm rearward from a hinged position while standing. Keeping the upper arm parallel to the floor throughout ensures full triceps shortening at the peak of the movement.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet hip-width apart and hinge forward at the hips until your torso is nearly parallel to the floor
  • Hold a dumbbell in one hand and draw that upper arm back until it is parallel to the floor, elbow bent at 90 degrees
  • Brace your core and keep your back flat
  • Extend your forearm straight back by straightening the elbow fully, squeezing the triceps at the top
  • Slowly return to the bent-elbow starting position under control
  • Complete all reps on one arm before switching sides
