About this exercise

A fundamental lower-body compound movement performed with dumbbells held at the sides or in a goblet position. The dumbbell squat builds quadriceps, glutes, and hamstring strength while being more accessible than the barbell back squat for beginners.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides (or one dumbbell vertically at chest height for the goblet variation)
  • Brace your core, keep your chest up, and maintain a neutral spine
  • Begin the descent by pushing your hips back and bending your knees simultaneously
  • Lower until your thighs are at least parallel to the floor, keeping your knees tracking over your toes
  • Drive through your heels to return to the starting standing position
  • Keep the dumbbells stable throughout and avoid rounding your lower back
