About this exercise

A lateral squat variation performed with dumbbells at your sides, where you step out to one side and squat down onto that leg while keeping the opposite leg straight. It targets the quadriceps and glutes while also engaging the inner thigh through the lateral loading angle.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides
  • Take a wide step out to one side, keeping your toes pointed forward or slightly outward
  • Shift your weight onto the stepping leg and squat down by bending that knee and pushing your hips back
  • Keep the opposite leg straight and your foot flat on the floor
  • Lower until your thigh approaches parallel to the floor or as deep as flexibility allows
  • Drive through the heel of the bent leg to return to the starting position
  • Alternate sides or complete all reps on one side before switching
