About this exercise

The dumbbell side lunge is a unilateral lower-body exercise that targets the inner thighs, quadriceps, and glutes by stepping laterally and lowering into a lunge. The added dumbbell resistance increases the challenge and stimulates greater muscle development through the hips and thighs.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides
  • Keep your feet hip-width apart and your chest tall
  • Take a large step directly to one side with one foot, keeping the toes of both feet pointing forward
  • Bend the knee of the stepping leg and push your hips back, lowering until that thigh approaches parallel with the floor
  • Keep the opposite leg straight and your torso upright throughout the descent
  • Push through the heel of the bent leg to drive yourself back to the starting position
  • Repeat on the same side or alternate sides each rep
