About this exercise

A standing oblique exercise in which you hold a dumbbell in one hand and laterally flex the torso to the weighted side and back. The contralateral oblique works as the primary mover while the ipsilateral oblique controls the return.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright with feet shoulder-width apart, holding a dumbbell in one hand at your side
  • Place your free hand behind your head or on your hip for stability
  • Keeping your hips square and your back straight, slowly bend your torso toward the dumbbell side
  • Lower the dumbbell toward your knee as far as your flexibility allows
  • Contract your oblique on the opposite side to return to the starting upright position
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching
