About this exercise

The dumbbell rear lunge (also called a reverse lunge) is a unilateral lower-body exercise performed by stepping one leg backward into a lunge while holding dumbbells at your sides. It builds strength and balance in the quadriceps, glutes, and hamstrings with less knee stress than a forward lunge.

How to Perform

  • Stand tall with feet hip-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides
  • Keep your chest up, shoulders back, and core braced
  • Step one foot straight back and lower your hips until both knees form roughly 90-degree angles
  • Ensure your front knee tracks over your toes and does not cave inward
  • Keep your torso upright throughout the descent
  • Push through the heel of your front foot to return to the starting position
  • Alternate legs or complete all reps on one side before switching
